He was born in Lackawanna, New York, into a family with a vocal group and radio program. Smith says that his mother was a major influence on him musically, as she introduced him to gospel, classical, and jazz music. He was part of several vocal ensembles in the 1950s, including the Teen Kings. Art Kubera, the owner of a local music store, gave Smith his first organ, a Hammond B3. Dr. Lonnie Smith has played with Melvin Sparks, Lou Donaldson, Lee Morgan, George Benson just to name a few. This interview was enlighting , informative and just plan fun. He has a great since of humor and stories that will leave you laughing. When you think of Hammond B3 organist he is on top of the list along with Jack Mcduff and Jimmy Smith. Drummer Fritz Wise born Texas grew up listening to Jazz and r&b. move to Los Angeles and went to Locke High which was well known for it's jazz program where such artist like Patrice Rushen, Ndugu Chancler, Munyoungo Jackson etc .
Fritz has played and recorded such artist like Nate Morgan, Horace Tapscott, Gary Bias, Azar Lawrence just to name a few. Whether he's a rousing tour de force, stoking the fire or resorting to his palette of serene colors, drummer Fritz Wise compliments any setting. His versatile approach embraces several genres from Funk to Jazz and just about everything in between. Fritz and I go way back to the Jazz Nite Flight a jazz program on KXLU in Los Angeles.
