Theo Saunders Born into the cultural vortex that is New York City's Upper West Side and raised by Broadway theater-performing parents, Theo Saunders was destined for the creative life. By the time he graduated from New York's prestigious High School for the Performing Arts, Saunders knew his future would be made seated in front of a piano playing jazz. But that future would not be in New York; at a certain point, Saunders knew he had to get out of the city, so he made the difficult decision to reverse the jazz musician's traditional west to east migration, eventually landing in the City of Angels, where he has been a vital musical presence for nearly twenty years. On Intergeneration the veteran pianist, composer and arranger has assembled a sextet of fellow LA-based musicians to help animate his compelling original compositions, as well as his hip arrangements of two classics.

Bassist John B Williams talks about his relationship with the late pianist Horace Silver. Started playing with Horace in 1967. John takes you on a personal journey about knowing and playing with the master. John latest CD intitled the African Queen a tribute to Horace Silver, is his way of thanking him for opening doors, being a mentor to him and a personal friend. Horace Elva Tapscott (April 6, 1934 – February 27, 1999) was an American jazz pianist and composer. He formed the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra (also known as P.A.P.A., or The Ark) in 1961 and led the ensemble through the 1990s.He was born in Houston, Texas and moved to Los Angeles, California at age nine. By this time he had begun to study piano and trombone. He played with Frank Morgan, Don Cherry, and Billy Higgins as a teenager. After service in the Air Force in Wyoming, he returned to Los Angeles and played trombone with various bands, notably Lionel Hampton (1959-61). Soon after, though, he quit playing trombone and focused on piano.In 1961 Tapscott formed the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, with the aim of preserving, developing and performing African-American music. As his vision grew, this became just one part of a larger organization in 1963, the Underground Musicians Association (UGMA), which later changed names to the Union of God's Musicians and Artists Ascension (UGMAA). Arthur Blythe, Stanley Crouch, Butch Morris, Wilber Morris, David Murray, Jimmy Woods, and Guido Sinclair all performed in Tapscott's Arkestra at one time or another. Tapscott and his work are the subjects of the UCLA Horace Tapscott Jazz Collection.Enthusiasts of his music formed two labels in the 1970s and 1980s, Interplay and Nimbus, for which he recorded.[3 This interview was done at KXLU radio station in 1983,the host my colleague Barry Thomas.
